About K-Culture Insider

Welcome to K-Culture Insider: Your Gateway to the Authentic Soul of Korea

Most blogs about Korean culture are written by people who discovered Korea through a drama or a playlist. This one is different.

K-Culture Insider was founded by someone who has lived Korea from the inside — born here, left, came back, served in the military, left again, built a career in international trade, and returned. That kind of back-and-forth between cultures gives you a perspective that no amount of research can replicate.

Who We Are

My name is Jinu, founder and chief editor of K-Culture Insider.

I was born in South Korea and moved to Toronto, Canada at age 20 to study — eventually graduating from high school there before returning to Korea to complete 26 months of mandatory military service, discharged at the rank of Sergeant. After that, I went back to Canada — this time to Vancouver — where I earned a degree in Computer Science from the University of the Fraser Valley.

Back in Korea, I worked briefly in the tech industry before pivoting to international trade in 2006. I've spent nearly two decades in import/export, working across scrap metal, non-ferrous materials, and most recently K-Beauty cosmetics — a field where I achieved the $10 Million Export Tower, one of South Korea's most recognized trade honors.

What does any of that have to do with a K-Culture blog?

Everything, actually.

Living between two countries for over a decade taught me exactly what international audiences misunderstand about Korea — and what they're genuinely hungry to know. The questions my Canadian friends used to ask me about Korean food, social dynamics, military culture, and daily life are exactly what this blog tries to answer. Not from a textbook. From experience.

Our Mission

To provide trustworthy, well-researched, and genuinely experience-based content that helps global readers understand Korean culture at a deeper level — not just what it looks like on the surface, but why it works the way it does.

Our Editorial Standards

Every article on K-Culture Insider is built on:

  • Firsthand cultural knowledge from decades of living, working, and traveling across Korea
  • Cross-cultural perspective developed through years in Canada and international trade
  • Historical research, official government and tourism data, and industry reports
  • Fact-checking and editorial review before every publication

We also use AI-assisted tools to support research organization and content workflows. Every article is reviewed, edited, and verified by a human editor before it goes live. We believe in being transparent about this — because our readers deserve to know how our content is made.
