Two days after the Grammy deadline passed, MTV announced its own nominees, and "SWIM" landed in two categories: Song of the Year and Best K-Pop. Song of the Year sits alongside Video of the Year and Artist of the Year as one of the VMAs' three biggest prizes, decided by open fan vote rather than an academy panel. BTS was first nominated here in 2021 with "Dynamite." This is their second shot; last year Rosé and Bruno Mars became the first K-pop-linked act to win it, with "APT."

"SWIM" is also up for Best K-Pop, a category BTS has won three times (2019–2021), tying the all-time record. J-hope picked up a separate nod for his feature on LE SSERAFIM's "SPAGHETTI." Six songs compete this year, including LISA's "Dream," BLACKPINK's "JUMP," CORTIS's "REDRED," and KATSEYE's "PINKY UP" — proof that a category once criticized for segregating K-pop from the main race now sits beside a Song of the Year field with two Korean-linked entries already in it.
Why This Timing Isn't an Accident
The numbers back it up: "SWIM" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, held a chart spot for 20 straight weeks, and hit No. 2 on the UK's Official Singles Chart — a career high there. "Arirang" opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 641,000 units, the biggest group-album opening week in over a decade.
The 2026 VMAs air September 27 from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, marking the ceremony's return to the West Coast after nine years.
